What now?
Navigating transitional times and a big announcement.
Career Advice: Keep Living While You’re Waiting
In May, we wrote about embracing liminal space, those in-between times in our lives that can cause uncertainty and stress.
Truth is, Brooke and I have been in our own (separate) liminal spaces for the better part of the year. Brooke’s related to the next phase of N’good Company and mine sensing a transition in my corporate career on the horizon.
If I’m completely honest, I did not expect to still be sitting in the in-between 6 months later, but here we are.
Next week will be my last with my current company, a journey that started nearly 13 years ago. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have such a tenure and even more fortunate for the extraordinary people I know and love along the way.
Although this year as felt like a long season of waiting, as the weeks roll on I’m learning that we must continue to live life in the midst of our waiting.
Life does not start when we get to where we are going, life is what happens along the way.
When I look back on the life, I’ve lived this year, I’ve gained an incredible new friend and collaborator who inspires me to keep learning and growing. Thank you, Brooke.❤️
I recently read novelist Ann Patchett’s commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College appropriately titled “What Now?” where she shares her journey on the many transitional crossroads we encounter throughout our lives.
She writes:
The secret is finding the balance between going out to get what you want and being open to the thing that actually winds up coming your way.
What now is not just a panic-stricken question tossed out into a dark unknown. What now can also be our joy.
It is a declaration of possibility, of promise, of chance. It acknowledges that our future is open, that we may well do more than anyone expected of us, that at every point in our development we are still striving to grow…. It’s up to you to choose a life that will keep expanding.
So as I embark on a future that is currently unknown (although, aren’t they all?!), I’m holding tightly to the promise of possibility, the openness of what is coming and continuing to live my life along the way.
