How to keep your eye on the ball in times of chaos. šŸ‘€ šŸ€ šŸ”„

Here for you to combat those long weekend Monday Scaries!

Yaā€™ll really loved our travel content last week! We saw a record number of clicks on our resources links, so we are going to try to share even more resources with you in the coming newsletters.

You didnā€™t even pass judgement on our several typos (šŸ¤£ whoops). At Nā€™good Company, art imitates life. We both had come off a travel week and were a little more sleepy eyed than usual. Thanks for giving us another chance this week.

Itā€™s a good thing weā€™re not perfectionists, right? šŸ˜ƒ

Career Advice: Donā€™t Let Chaos Pull Your Focus

The Office, NBC via Giphy

Letā€™s get real. Chaos in this world is inevitableā€”whether all hell is breaking loose at work (ahem, The Office šŸ¤£), your children are off the rails at home, the world is doing wild world-ly things or perhaps there is an unpredictable election season on the horizon (gasp, thereā€™s no such thing šŸ™ˆšŸ™‰šŸ™Š) Chances are one or more of those things are popping off (or about to pop off) in your life and you need to somehow, someway keep calm and carry on.

The ability to maintain focus amidst a storm is crucial not only for our success but also for our well-being. Itā€™s also a muscle that can be developed to grow stronger over time ā€” isnā€™t that good news?

Donā€™t know where to start? Hereā€™s how we stay focused when everything around us feels chaotic:

1. Prioritize What Matters.

When chaos strikes, everything can seem urgent. The key is to step back and prioritize tasks. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to help you decide whatā€™s urgent and important versus what can be delegated or delayed.

Having clear priorities allows you to focus on high-impact tasks and prevents you from being overwhelmed by less important distractions.

2. Break It Down

Enormous challenges or crises often feel insurmountable because they seem too large to tackle all at once. Break tasks down into smaller, more manageable chunks. This can provide a sense of accomplishment as you complete each step and help maintain momentum toward larger goals.

3. Control What You Can

Focus on the things within your control. While you canā€™t always change external circumstances, you can control your own actions, attitude, and responses. Stoicism anybody?!?

Kennaā€™s Tip: one thing I focus on controlling is my thoughts. Itā€™s so easy for me to be in my head, letting the chaos swirl and take over. When I slip into this state, I tell myself ā€œwe only deal in factsā€ and I let myself ruminate on the facts and if itā€™s not a fact, itā€™s not allowed space in my brain.

Shifting your focus to the areas where you have influence can help you stay grounded and prevent you from feeling powerless.

4. Practice Mindfulness

In chaotic situations, our minds can quickly spiral into anxiety and distraction. Practicing mindfulnessā€”whether through meditation, breathing exercises, or simply taking a quiet moment to center yourselfā€”can help you regain focus and clarity.

Kennaā€™s Tip: When I feel the anxiety rising in my body, I drop what Iā€™m doing and go for a walk. Being outside and moving my body always helps me work through the cortisol dump and resets by perspective. Every time. Find the thing that helps you reset and make it a non-negotiable part of your day.

6. Stay Connected to Your "Why"

During chaotic times, itā€™s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Reconnecting with your purposeā€”whether itā€™s your personal goals, the teamā€™s mission, or the companyā€™s visionā€”can help you stay motivated.

Brookeā€™s Tip: I start every morning with a focused reflection and journaling time. This helps ground me in my purpose and connect to what is happening inward and allows me to set my intention for the day.

When you know why youā€™re doing what youā€™re doing, itā€™s easier to push through distractions and stay focused on what truly matters.

9. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

In the midst of chaos, perfection is often unattainable. Focus on making steady progress rather than getting everything exactly right. When you prioritize progress over perfection, you allow yourself to move forward with less stress and more momentum.

Chaos is an inevitable part of both work and life, but it doesnā€™t have to derail your focus. By prioritizing effectively, practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, and staying connected to your purpose, you can navigate chaotic times with clarity and determination.

When you stay focused amidst the noise, you empower yourselfā€”and your teamā€”to achieve success even in the most challenging circumstances. Now thatā€™s an example we can all learn to follow.
